We get it. Winter can be a challenging time to remain active thanks to the colder weather, less daylight hours and snowy, slippery conditions. Remaining active year round is really important. We've jotted down some tips to help you stay on track with your mental and physical health goals, even as the snow falls!

Before we dive into some ideas to help you stay active this winter, let's go back to the foundation and talk a bit about exercise. We've all heard how important exercise is. But what counts as exercise, and why is it so beneficial? Exercise is any activity that helps to improve the function of the body and overall wellbeing. There are many ways to move the body, including running, walking, swimming, dancing, weight lifting and playing sports. These activities can also lead to healthier physical, emotional and mental health.

Six Ways Exercise Can Help You Live an Energized, Healthy Life:

  1. Lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes by strengthening the heart and improving blood circulation in the body.
  2. Helps the body develop stronger bones, muscles and joints and lowers the risk of osteoporosis.
  3. Increased opportunity to socialize in group settings and develop skills such as teamwork and goal-setting.
  4. Helps release positive endorphins in the brain that help reduce stress and anxiety
  5. Reduce the severity of pain, and improve mobility.
  6. Improve self-confidence, sense of control and motivation.

So as you can see, making exercise part of your everyday life is a great idea for your overall health. Even small increments, such as taking the stairs, shoveling snow, or walking your kids to school can check off some of these benefits!

Okay sounds great, except it's snowy and freezing outside!!!

Yup. Even Elsa is bothered by it.

Here's our Top 5 Tips for Staying Active During Winter

  1. PLAY! Go tobogganing or build a snowman. These activities include walking, bending, lifting, and most of all, fun.
  2. Shoveling snow: Not everyone's favourite activity, but this can be excellent exercise. Just be sure your shoveling technique is spine-friendly!
  3. Winter sports such as snowshoeing, skiing, or snowboarding. Take advantage of our proximity to the mountains and spend a day in nature.
  4. Workout online: One great thing to come out of the pandemic is more options for easily accessible online exercise programs you can enjoy without needing to leave your home.
  5. Join an indoor class or team: Enjoy meeting new like-minded people in a fun, social setting.

If you are going to be outdoors, be sure to check the weather and plan accordingly. Dress in several layers of comfortable clothing that you can remove as you warm up. Layers can help you prevent overheating, sweating and becoming too cold.

Whether indoors or outside, be as active as you can and most importantly, have fun!
