Causes of elbow tendonopathy

Elbow tendonopathies can have numerous causes. Most often they are result of a chronic, repetitive motion that has lead to damage of the fibres that make up the tendon. This damage can be minor (irritation and inflammation), but can progress to micro tearing and even a complete rupture in extreme cases. The vast majority of extremely painful elbow tendonopathies have very little tearing and is predominately caused by microtrauma and inflammatory chemicals flooding the area causing pain.

How can we help?

The first step in resolving your tendonopathy is a thorough case history and orthopedic assessment. By using various testing methods, our clinicians are able to determine if you indeed have a tendonopathy and can give you an indication if there is any significant tendon damage. After determining the cause of your pain and the degree of injury, your clinician will recommend a treatment course that will likely involve multiple modalities and may involve a therapeutic exercise program, elbow brace/ supports, or various other interventions.

What is tennis or golfers elbow?

Tennis and golfers elbow are both common names for what is medically referred to as an elbow tendonopathy. A tendonopathy occurs when you have pain over the area where muscle joins bone. This is often caused by repetitive use or over use injuries such as typing on a keyboard, construction work, and playing sports.  You may occasionally hear healthcare professionals refer to a tendonopathy as "tendinitis"; this refers to the fact that the tendon may be inflammed and swollen.
